The main tower of the eastern wall of the Kremlin, in which the travel gates are located, is called the Spasskaya Tower. This tower is visible from Red Square.
The first tower of the Kremlin was called Tynitsky. It was built in 1485. Italian architect Anton Fryazin. Its name comes from the fact that a secret passage to the Moscow River was dug under it, which would allow residents to receive a sufficient amount of water, in the event of a long siege of the fortress. Beklemishevskaya Tower was erected two years later, its location is determined by the southeastern corner of the Kremlin. The construction did not end there, but continued at a fast pace, and so in 1491 two more towers were built – Frolovskaya and Nikolskaya. They also had a traveling gate, and was born thanks to another Italian – Pietro Antonio Solari. A total of 20 towers were built.
Of course, there were several superstitions. One of them says that the gates of the Frolovsky tower were considered saints. Когда проходили через них, то запрещалось ехать верхом или же проходить с покрытой головой, в независимости от пола проходящего. It was through these gates that Kyiv met ambassadors, various foreign guests, and also escorted regiments to battle. However, in 1658, this tower was renamed the Spassk Tower. It was called that in honor of the two icons that were above the gate on both sides, that is, from the side of Red Square and from the side of the courtyard. The famous clock is located in its tent part. The clock changed several times, for example, under Peter the Great, they were Dutch, and the shallows of the twelve time dial, as well as musical accompaniment. Time passed, and the clock stopped working, and soon they were broken at all, and it was impossible to fix them.
The clocks that are on the tower were now installed only in 1851-1852 by two brothers Ivan and Nikolai Butenopi. During the revolution of 1917. They were damaged, but soon they were repaired by the locksmith Nikolai Berens with his son.
